A Constant State of Vulnerability
"Over 77 million people in Pakistan are suffering from a lack of food security The Mission & Outreach Committee has determined that children's education is to be the focus of the international component of our work. We also determined that the mission must also focus on helping people help themselves. Reversing food shortages in Pakistan cannot be overlooked as children's educations are compromised by malnutrition. Barb Summers, PWS&D's Program Coordinator, Communications, says, "You have to feed the people and prevent them from starving before you can teach them."
Mirpurkhas, in Sindh province in southeast Pakistan, is a mixed community of Hindus, Muslims and a minority of Christians. A food security program, in this poorly irrigated region, has been developed for families who eat but one daily meal, two if the harvest is good. Another program aims to assist women, through training and micro-loans, to increase family revenue. Along with Church World Service, PWS&D also partners in this project with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank which offers this insight on their website. |
